Welcome to Chandernagore College

The origin of Chandernagore College dates back to the establishment of “L'Ecole de Sainte Marie” in 1862 by the French Jesuit Missionary Father Magloire Barthet. The institution which was run by the Jesuit Missionaries, was placed under the responsibility of the French Government on the 15 of December 1887. In 1901, its name was changed to “College Dupleix”. After India obtained Independence, the new government of the free city of Chandernagore renamed the college as Chandernagore College on 17 May 1948, a name which remains till today. After the merger of the free city with the Indian Union on 9 June 1952, the college came under the control of the Ministry of External Affairs and it was finally integrated with the state of West Bengal on 2 October 1954. Chandernagore College became affiliated to the University of Burdwan in 1960. Consequently, Chandernagore College became a college administered directly by the Government of West Bengal. The college was re-accredited by NAAC in 2016 and was awarded the B++ rank.
